Physical geography is the branch of geography that deals with the natural features and phenomena of the Earth's surface, such as landforms, climate, and vegetation. Indian Physical Geography
India's diverse physical landscape is a result of its geological history and varied climatic conditions. It can be broadly divided into several physiographic divisions.
1. The Northern Mountains
This vast mountain system comprises the Himalayas, the Karakoram, and the Hindu Kush ranges. The Himalayas, the youngest and highest fold mountains in the world, are further divided into three parallel ranges:
- The Greater Himalayas (Himadri): The northernmost range, containing the highest peaks like Mount Everest (Sagarmatha in Nepal, Chomolungma in Tibet) and Kanchenjunga. It is characterized by permanent snow cover and glaciers.
- The Lesser Himalayas (Himachal): Located south of the Himadri, this range is known for its hill stations like Shimla, Manali, and Darjeeling. It features valleys like the Kashmir Valley and Kangra Valley.
- The Outer Himalayas (Siwaliks): The southernmost range, characterized by foothills and river valleys (duns) like Dehradun.
The Himalayas play a vital role in India's climate, acting as a barrier against cold winds from Central Asia and causing monsoon rains. They are also the source of major rivers like the Ganga and Brahmaputra.
2. The Northern Plains
Formed by the alluvial deposits of the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra rivers and their tributaries, the Northern Plains are the most fertile and densely populated region of India. They are generally level and low-lying. These plains can be divided into four sub-regions:
- Bhabar: A narrow strip of land at the foothills of the Siwaliks, where rivers deposit pebbles and sand. It is porous, and streams disappear underground.
- Terai: South of the Bhabar, it's a marshy, damp region with dense forests and diverse wildlife, where streams reappear.
- Bangar: The older alluvial soil, forming the upland plains, generally free from floods.
- Khadar: The newer alluvial soil, found in the floodplains, which is renewed almost every year.
These plains are ideal for agriculture, supporting crops like rice, wheat, sugarcane, and pulses.
3. The Peninsular Plateau
This is the oldest and most stable landmass of India, shaped like an inverted triangle. It is composed of old crystalline, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. It is broadly divided into two main parts:
- Central Highlands: Located north of the Narmada river, including the Malwa Plateau and the Chota Nagpur Plateau.
- Deccan Plateau: Located south of the Narmada river, bordered by the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats. Its northeastern part is the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The Deccan Plateau is further divided into the Maharashtra Plateau, Karnataka Plateau, and Tamil Nadu Plateau.
The plateau is rich in minerals like iron ore, coal, and bauxite. The Western Ghats are a more continuous range than the Eastern Ghats and are higher. The highest peak in the Western Ghats is Anamudi. The Eastern Ghats are discontinuous and lower, with passes like the Palghat.
4. The Indian Desert (Thar Desert)
Located in the northwestern part of India, west of the Aravalli Range, this is a vast arid region characterized by sand dunes (drias), rocky surfaces, and very low rainfall (less than 150 mm annually). The Luni River is the only significant river in this region.
5. The Coastal Plains
These are narrow strips of land along the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
- Western Coastal Plains: Located between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. It is a narrow plain, divided into the Konkan Coast (Mumbai to Goa), the Karnataka Coast, and the Malabar Coast (Kerala).
- Eastern Coastal Plains: Located between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal. It is a wider plain, divided into the Northern Circars (north of the Mahanadi river) and the Coromandel Coast (south of the Mahanadi river). It is known for its deltas formed by rivers like Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri.
6. The Islands
India has two major island groups:
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Located in the Bay of Bengal, these are volcanic islands, forming an extension of the Arakan Yoma range of Myanmar. The highest point is Saddle Peak.
- Lakshadweep Islands: Located in the Arabian Sea, these are coral islands. Minicoy is the largest island.
World Physical Geography
World physical geography covers the Earth's major landforms, climate patterns, and water bodies.
1. Major Landforms
Landforms are natural features of the Earth's surface. The main types are mountains, plateaus, plains, and valleys.
- Mountains: Formed by tectonic plate movements (folding, faulting) or volcanic activity. Examples include the Himalayas (fold), Alps (fold), Andes (fold), Rockies (fold), Mount Fuji (volcanic).

2. Climate and Climate Zones
Climate refers to the average weather conditions in a region over a long period. The main factors influencing climate are latitude, altitude, distance from the sea, prevailing winds, and ocean currents. The Earth is divided into three main climate zones:
- Torrid Zone (Tropical Zone): Between the Tropic of Cancer (23.5° N) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5° S). It receives direct sunlight throughout the year, leading to high temperatures and humidity.
- Temperate Zone: Between the Torrid Zone and the Frigid Zone. It experiences moderate temperatures with distinct seasons.

- Subsistence Agriculture: Practiced to meet the needs of the farmer's family, with little surplus for sale. Examples include intensive subsistence farming (e.g., rice cultivation in monsoon regions) and nomadic herding.
- Commercial Agriculture: Practiced to produce crops and livestock for sale in the market. Examples include:
